* Fine craftsmanship down to the least detail.
* Restrained decorative touches that say this is Thailand, not just some anonymous tropical getaway
Weaving an exotic spell From the time you enter an Ocean View Room, you find yourself embraced by a special tropical magic. Your senses are almost overwhelmed by the highly polished wood floors with their gorgeous colour and grain, by the patterned silk highlights, the elegant carving in the wall recess behind the bed head, the carved door lintels over the doors to bathroom and deck and other understated hints of traditional Thai wood carving.
Serving guest needs At the same time, these rooms are functional, considerate. The guests' every need has been anticipated.
* King-sized bed with silk bedspread and big teak bedside tables to either side. * Comfortable sitting area by the window. * Big outside deck with sitting area and view of the sea. * Sliding wooden panels conceal a 32-inch LDC monitor. * Large teak desk under the LCD panel with cupboards either side. * Well-appointed minibar with counter and cupboards. * Generous, intelligently designed wardrobe space, and more for shoes and luggage as you come in. * Floor-to-ceiling hallway mirror. * Bedside console for full control of air-conditioning and lighting throughout, with dimmers that can cater for romance or reading, for work on that novel or just enough illumination to see the TV guide in case you want to know what movie's next. * Lovely wooden floors extend throughout, even to the bath and toilet areas. Big mirrors on four sides blow the bathroom up to giant size, magnifying the vision of polished woods and elegant black granite bath and basin countertops, the four-coloured diamond ceramic tiles in toilet and shower stall. Then there are all the thoughtful little touches, both aesthetic and functional, such as the high-quality magnifying shaving mirror on an extendable arm and the live orchid in a ceramic pot.
Whether from inside the room or out on deck, you get to experience the sea's infinite variety of moods, including gorgeous sunsets. Karon Beach scenes, meanwhile, change with the tides, weather, season and time of day. After nightfall, the show continues with surf breaking on the rocks below and strings of brightly lit squid-fishing boats strung like gems across the far horizon. Or you can go inside and close the elegant silk drapes for cosy enjoyment of the room and your company.
Jungle View Rooms
Marina Phuket Resort has managed a neat trick with the Jungle View Rooms. It's magic - these luxurious units are both airy and spacious and cosy and intimate
Airy & spacious The generous floor space and high rattan and teak-beam ceiling is further expanded by big windows onto the expansive private deck outside and by large mirrors in the bedroom, dressing area and bathroom.
Cosy & intimate Ideal for honeymoons, whether first or second, the Jungle View Rooms offer sumptuous comfort and total privacy. The dark teak floors, furniture and trim contrast pleasingly with light cream walls complemented by rich golden accents such as the Jim Thompson silk headboard panels. Other Thai touches include glass doors with gold-leaf appliqué.
The spacious window nook includes silk-upholstered sofa and cushions with potted bird-of-paradise flowers either side. An enormous wood-framed mirror on the opposite wall reflects the garden outside, providing the option, wherever you sit, of effectively bringing the jungle into the room.
Concern for guests' privacy includes deep garden between each Jungle View Room and the raised jungle walkways. Strollers and room occupants remain invisible to one another.
Function never sacrificed to luxury
Lovely shaded lamps bracket the king-size bed. Additional gooseneck reading lamps, meanwhile, make reading in bed a pleasure, even if one partner wants to sleep. Throughout, the discreet lighting system - both beautiful and functional, like the rest of the design - can be adjusted to suit any mood.
Similarly, the lavish storage space is well designed and aesthetically pleasing. A roomy dressing area with white marble bench is expanded by yet another mirror.
The rich wooden floors extend into the bathroom, where a deep terrazzo tub sits amid lots of mirrors, one of them floor-to-ceiling, and into the four-hued tiled shower and toilet areas.
Quality local materials Hardwood floors extend throughout the bedroom, bathroom and deck areas. The finest Thai fabrics and other touches of traditional Thai culture help to leave guests with treasured memories of their stay in the Kingdom.
The jungle Each Jungle View Room is hidden in dense jungle. The original coconut grove of 22 years ago has evolved into a botanical garden, a flourishing ecosystem, home to a wide variety of wild species as well as putting a face to plants many people know only by name or by the fruit that appears in local supermarkets — jackfruit, mango, banana and more.
Romantic dining adventures * On the Rock serves excellent seafood and thai dishes. Long a favourite with visitors and locals alike, it lies just outside the range of the surf and presents sweeping views of the sea and Karon Beach. This is the best spot on the island from which to admire the sunset. From On the Rock, you can also watch friends and family snorkelling while you enjoy a leisurely breakfast or lunch.
Heart of the Culture * Sala Thai, offering an extensive menu of both Thai and Continental dishes, overlooks a remarkable two-level pool nestled in a fairytale jungle glen. The distinctively Thai atmosphere is created in part by the traditionally inspired architecture, in part by the traditional Thai musicians and dancers who perform in the evenings.
